Finding the right starter kit can be a tough choice, but we've highlighted a few model kits that are great for beginners
Where do you start? With wood, metal or plastic kits? And just how difficult is a beginners kit versus an intermediate kit?
Â
Well, it depends. But a good rule of thumb is to look at how many pieces are in the kit – the fewer generally means the kit is simpler to put together (there aren’t as many steps where you can potentially go wrong). Beginners kits also tend have very simple step by step instructions.
Wooden model kits for beginners
Wooden model kits are a great place to start model making – they usually don’t require gluing or painting as the wood pieces simply slot together. These make great solo kits to build or great to complete as part of a family project.

Plastic model kits can be a bit more complex, but there’s a great range of starter kits and kits suitable for beginners. Some kits, such as the Airfix Quickbuild range, are simple plastic blocks that clip together. Other starter kits require gluing and painting but have fewer pieces than more complex kits (usually less than 100).

Metal model kits for beginners
Like wood kits, metal models don’t usually require gluing or painting to complete the model, which makes them a bit more beginner-friendly. They do tend to be smaller though, so with more intricate metal pieces (with small tabs that need to be folded to assemble the model), a steady hand is required. But, the final models are lovely little keepsakes and a great challenge for beginners.
