German Type VII U-boats were the most common type of U-boat (‘Unterseeboot’, the German word for submarine) used in World War II, and was one of the most advanced class of submarine at the outset of the war. The Type VIIC was one of the most common variants of the submarine, with 568 commissioned from 1940 to 1945 and while it had a shorter effective range (8,500 nautical miles) than the Type IX (11,000 nautical miles), it was still hugely effective until later in the war where Allied anti-submarine efforts turned the tide of the German U-boat campaign.

The most famous Type VIIC was the U-96, featured in the novel and film ‘Das Boot’, based on the author’s experience as a war correspondant.
