Choosing the Right Model Kit Gift for an Adult
Start with something they like
A favourite aircraft, a film they rewatch or a car they used to own gives you a starting point. Look at the finished model as well as the build itself.
Match their building experience
Choose First Build or Easy for someone new to the hobby. For a regular modeller, find out which materials and assembly methods they enjoy. Browse the wider model kits for adults guide for more options.
Fit the project around their time
For an evening project, look for a recorded build time and allow extra time for glue or paint to dry. Longer kits suit someone with somewhere to leave a build set up between sessions.
Check the box contents
Look for glue, paint, tools, batteries or a power lead, depending on the kit. See how the requirements differ for wooden, metal and plastic model kits for adults.
Think about what happens after the build
A compact display suits someone short on space. If they enjoy seeing how things work, choose a working model they can operate once it’s finished.

Model Kit Gift FAQs for Adults
What is a good first model kit gift for an adult?
Choose a subject they like in First Build or Easy difficulty. A slot-together kit is a simple way to start, and a paint-and-glue starter set is a good fit for someone who wants to try finishing a scale model.
What model kit can an adult build in one evening?
Look for a kit with a recorded build time that fits the evening, such as the UGEARS Old Clock Tower. Allow for time spent sorting parts and for any paint or glue to dry.
Do I need to buy tools, glue or paint with the gift?
Check the contents of the exact kit. A starter set may include glue, paint and a brush. A metal tab kit may benefit from fine pliers or cutters, and light-up models may need batteries or a USB lead.
What is a good model kit gift for an adult under £25?
Look for a small build in a subject they already enjoy. The Old Clock Tower suits someone who likes gears, while the Hubble Telescope suits a space fan who enjoys working with small metal parts. Check the Under £25 tab for current options.
What can I give an experienced modeller who already has plenty of kits?
Ask which subjects, scales or editions they collect. Look for a model that fills a gap, or choose a different assembly method they would enjoy trying. Check which paints and tools they already use before adding supplies. Our guide to gifts for experienced model builders has ideas for a different kind of build. See gifts for model collectors if you’re choosing to fill a gap in their collection.
