What’s the difference between the different Spitfire wing types?
C Type wings were the most common design allowing for different arament combinations. D Type wings were deployed with no araments for photo-reconnaissance missions. E Type wings were identical to C Type but allowed for either 4 wing mounted canons, or two canons and two machine guns in the inner bays. What’s a good Spitfire model kit for beginners?
For younger children, the Airfix Quickbuild model kits work like LEGO blocks that simply click together.
For older children and adults, the smaller Spitfire model kits at 1:72 scale are a great starting point. They will require gluing and painting but have fewer pieces than the larger kits so are a great, low-cost introduction to model building.
What was the most common Spitfire model?
The Spitfire Mk V was the most common model with 6,487 built. This was closely followed by the Spitfire Mk IX (type 361) which was described as a ‘quantum leap’ over the Mk Vb thanks to the new Merlin 61 engine.
What are the different scales of Spitfire model kits?
The smaller Spitfire model kits are 1:72 and 1:48 scale, so these have fewer pieces and are cheaper than other models.
1:32 scale model kits are slightly bigger, have more pieces and as a result are more expensive.
The largest Spitfire model kits are 1:24 scale, which come with hundreds of pieces and are more detailed.
How many different marks of Spitfire were there?
Over 20,000 Spitfires were built, evolving from the Mk1 to the Mk24 with many variants inbetween. Each variant represents technological advances in engine power, design and capabilities.
